1947 Arnold Levinson opened Brittons on 1337 Main St on July 28th. His vision was to offer a sense of style, quality fabrics, fine tailoring, and exceptional personal service.

1954 Arnold wanted to give his wife, Faye, a pair of madras shorts for her birthday. Desperate to surprise her, he mentioned the shorts to a vendor he bought men's clothing from. Fortunately, the salesman said "I have them!" Arnold decided to not only get these shorts for Faye but also to buy a few for the store. The shorts were an instant sensation: this was the introduction of ladies' clothing to Brittons.

1958-1969 Columbia was thriving and Brittons was flourishing. People were moving into the developing suburbs around the city. Dutch Square was South Carolina's first enclosed mall. There, Brittons established its second store.

1973 Lucky Levinson joins his family's business.

1975 Perry Lancaster joins the Brittons team.

1975-1989 As baby boomers matured, film and television prompted the cultivation of individualistic style. This gave rise to casual-chic; everyday wear was no longer blue collar, it was an opportunity to express personal style. In addition, both men and women professionals used "power dressing" as an effort to stand out and be noticed. New designers like Ralph Lauren, Donna Karan, Giorgio Armani, and Calvin Klein emerged. Arnold had the vision to be the first to bring them all to South Carolina.
